Where, How and Why to Purchase a Domain Name

This site exists because I had a problem. Maybe you have a similar problem.

I had a business idea. I wanted to build a site and got to the point where I could no longer avoid purchasing a domain. Hadn’t actually registered a domain in some time but it seemed that you had to go to Internic … or something. Right? Wrong.

Since I’d last looked, about 8 trillion domain name registrars seemed to have popped up. So this was the problem: should Jane Doe Business Owner go with the cheapest registrar? And if not, why not?

Happily, the answer turned out to be: don’t overpay for a domain name. Pick the cheapest. But pick wisely.

Wisely, because domain name resellers have proliferated like rabbits over the last few years. Competition’s fierce, and profits are down. So, some domain name broker-registrars presumably teeter on the edge of insolvency. And you don’t want your hard-won domain and lovingly-built site to go down with a bankrupt registrar.

Not to mention that hard-pressed registrars can use some unfriendly tactics to keep your domains under their control. And some do.

So where should Jane Doe, Business Owner, go to purchase a cheap domain name safely?

Check out (How to) Purchase a Cheap Domain Name for my personal recommendation. But don’t just take my word for it; check out the Domain Registrar Reviews. Experienced domain buyers have rated and reviewed some of the leading registrars there. Please share your experiences as well.
